CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) –  stands as one of the fundamental principles of the Diploma Program (DP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB).

But what is CAS, and what exactly is it? It means that IB students don’t just care about results. Emotional, ethical and intellectual development also matters.

What is the Importance of CAS (Creativity, Action and Service)?

CAS supports students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning.

It also provides them with opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others while fostering a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment of their work.

At the same time, CAS has an important role in counteracting the academic pressure of the DP.

CAS Structure (Creativity, Action and Service)

This principle belongs to the two-year pre-university Program called the International Baccalaureate (IB), aimed at students from 16 to 19.

The three areas of the CAS framework are interlinked with specific activities to encourage students to make connections between the different subjects.

  • Creativity. On the one hand, the expansion and exploration of ideas lead to creative, original or interpretive thought or action.
  • Action or Activity. Also, activities involving a challenge or physical effort help maintain a healthy lifestyle and complement academic tasks.
  • Service. In addition, a collaborative exchange with the community in response to a real need means learning for the student.

A CAS experience must fit into one or more of the three areas. On the one hand, be based on some ability or interest. On the other hand, it allows developing the attributes of the learning community of the International Baccalaureate. Finally, not to be used in the students’ tasks in the DP subjects.

As a result, the CAS program culminates in achieving seven major goals. Thus, some of them can even achieve on several occasions, and through the portfolio, the students show the school evidence of their achievements.

  • Identify the strong and weak abilities in oneself.
  • Show that challenges have remained faced and developed new skills have developed.
  • Ability to articulate the stages of a CAS experience.
  • Show perseverance and commitment in experiences.
  • Capacity for teamwork and recognition of its advantages.
  • Commitment to international issues.
  • Awareness of the consequences of decisions.

Generalities IB – CAS (Creativity, Action and Service)

All Diploma Program (DP) students must complete the requirements that make up the CAS program.

The one that is based on the reflection inherent in the activities that students develop and enables experimental learning through the participation of students in a variety of artistic, sports, physical and community service activities. The Diploma Program aims to develop in students the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to achieve the goals of the IB. CAS experiences can be associated with any DP subject group, and teachers can support linking between them.

CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) Projects

Service is one of the three foundational elements that all students must complete as part of this Program. Since 2020, the students have raised their projects within the great Max Uhle Community due to the current context. In this publication and the following ones, we will present a summary of these projects from the hands of their protagonists.

A good CAS program should be enjoyable and challenging, a path to personal discovery.

Although each student has a different starting point and, therefore, other goals and needs, for the majority, the activities constitute deep and transformative experiences of great importance for their lives. CAS is one of the core constituents of the DP.
